Producing plants and animal meal without soil

PRODUCING PLANTS AND ANIMAL MEAL WITHOUT SOIL

Ethiopian Behaylu Abreha has become the 2014 semifinalist in the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) competition which is led by the U.S Department of State and is being implemented.

Although Ethiopia stands first in its livestock resources, productivity remains low due to poor quality feed supply. By improving green feed supply, smallholder producers can boost their income and achieve food security in a speedy manner. Hydroponic green feed production has a number of positive impacts, like  Minimum use of land- to produce 600 kg/day of animal feed, it requires 10,000m2 of land in conventional practices and this is significantly reduced to 50m2 of land in hydroponic techniques,  Reduced growing time- In conventional practices it takes 45-60 days to grow a consumable green feed while only seven days is needed to produce such green feed,  Reduced water consumption-to produce 1kg of animal feed, 80-90 liters of water is required in conventional practices, and this is reduced to 2-3liters of water under hydroponic techniques, Land fertility is not an issue; any marginal soil and wasteland can be used for production of green feed and this benefits landless youths and women, Year round production and  Environmental friendly production system.
Most conventional practices depend on chemical inputs such as inorganic fertilizers and herbicides/pesticides. But hydroponic techniques depend on organic solutions without herbicides/pesticides. Hydroponic greed feed production in the Ethiopian context is new and has not been widely applied to smallholder farming systems. The solution used to grow the plants is made from local ingredients and formulated in a unique way. Unlike high tech hydroponic techniques that use expensive materials, our approach to the establishment of hydroponic system entirely depends on cheap and locally available raw materials. The company is introducing a low cost green feed production and is competitive with respect to; Inputs needed to produce a unit of green feed, Price needed to purchase a given amount of green feed, and Steady supply of green feed.
